FAQs
IS BALLET CALIENTE A COMPETITION SCHOOL?
No. Unlike other area studios, Ballet Caliente does not participate in competitions. We are a classical dance school and emphasize technique and proper training. Our students enjoy the process of creating a full-scale performance both in December and in June and many of our advanced students enjoy performing at the River Concert Series in the summer months. Our youngest students enjoy a recital in May each year!
ARE STUDENTS PLACED IN CLASSES BY AGE OR ABILITY?
Each year, students who are ages 6 and older are evaluated by ability. Our teachers continue to evaluate students throughout the fall months. If they feel that a student should placed in a higher level, they will recommend that she or he make the transition.
Students ages 3, 4, and 5 are placed according to age.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT CLASS TO REGISTER FOR?
If your child is:
Age 3 or 4 - Register for Pre-Ballet
Age 5 - Register for Primary Ballet
Age 6 or older (beginners) - Register for Ballet 1
Age 9 or older (beginners) - Please contact us for an evaluation during the school year.
Dancers with prior experience - please email us to set up an evaluation for proper placement. You may contact [email protected] for more information on our programs.
HOW DO I REGISTER?
To register , you'll click on the "register" link next to class name. That will prompt you to select the day of the week you'd like your son or daughter to attend. From there, you'll be prompted to created an account and enter your personal information.
WHEN DO CLASSES BEGIN?
Each year, we start in early September and run until early summer. We close registration in the month of January to give us time to prepare for the May recital and June production. If you are inquiring about classes after mid-January, please look for our summer dance program information to be posted in March.
WHAT SHOULD MY STUDENT WEAR TO CLASS?
During the school year, dancers wear different colored leotards to designate which level they are in. Our Pre-Ballet and Primary students wear our light pink leotard from Capezio. Our Ballet 1 students wear a light blue Capezio leotard. There are images (and a link to Amazon) on our Uniform Requirements page. (You don't need to purchase it from there, but it's often helpful for parents to see what it looks like in case they'd like to buy it elsewhere.)
Tights and ballet shoes are also required for each class. Tights may be purchased on Amazon or any local dance store. Many of our dancers prefer the "ultra-soft" tights that are a bit softer on the skin. Several brands offer a softer version and can be found on Amazon as well as other dance stores.

DOES MY DANCER NEED TO WEAR A BUN?
Yes, we require all students to have their hair up and off of their face. If your dancer has extremely short hair (a pixie cut, for example), a simple clip can help keep hair from falling in her face. Why do we require a bun? If a dancer's hair is down, she will feel it fall in her face, tickle her nose, or otherwise distract her while she is trying to focus on her class. Hair off the face prepares dancers for what will be expected of them as they continue training.
Never made a bun before? We've provided two excellent videos from The Washington School of Ballet that show you how to make the perfect ballet bun for both short and long hair. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of this page to view them.
HOW MUCH IS TUITION? ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL FEES?
Families have two different payment options. You are welcome to pay with a check each month and simply pop it into our tuition drop box in the studio's lobby. Or, you may prefer to pay online by linking a bank account. (Many of our families like the automatic withdrawal each month.)

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PERFORMANCES.
Every May, we put on a beautiful recital for our Pre-ballet, Primary, and Ballet 1 dancers! This is an opportunity for our younger dancers to shine! Students in our level 2 through Studio Company perform in a full-scale production in early June. In past years, we've put on Madeline, Peter Pan, Charlotte's Web, The Wizard of Oz, The Ugly Duckling, and Where the Wild Things Are.
Some students in our Pre-ballet, Primary, and Level 1 classes are invited to perform a small role in the larger show, which is a great opportunity for them to learn more about the rehearsal process as well as be on stage once again!
We also offer a Christmas performance each year that our Ballet level 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and Company members may participate in.
I'D LIKE TO SPEAK WITH SOMEONE ABOUT MY CHILD. HOW DO I REACH YOU?
